Editorial Illustration and Spread

“It may take me a long time to realize that I am the same age as that mother is now. But I will still be older by then, and will have learned the wrong thing.”

I created an editorial illustration for Lydia Davis’s essay “New Things In My Life.” A poignant and abstract piece about Davis’s perception of time and aging, and the constant disconnect she feels between the two. I wanted to visually capture this disconnect between mind and body, so I illustrated an old, wrinkled hand, holding up a mirror to see a young girl.

The mirror’s reflection represents her mental state while the wrinkled hand represents her reality, the reality of time. I chose to keep the face and hand black and white to create a striking contrast between the background. I chose a bold title-treatment that catches the reader's attention, then set my body copy in proper magazine format. I also provided a mock-up to bring the spread to life.
